Abstract
Interpretation of the Qur'an is very important because it is a way to understand kalamullah, or the Qur'an, as a guideline for human life. Tafsir of the Qur'an has many virtues, including: helping to understand the meaning of the verses of the Qur'an, helping to understand the wisdom and messages contained in the Qur'an, helping to take lessons and inspiration in dealing with various life situations, helping to deepen the understanding of the life of the Prophet PBUH and his companions, and others. Tafsir Al-Qur'an is a tool for interpreting the verses of the Qur'an. Literally, tafsir means explaining. Each verse of the Qur'an has its own interpretation, so not all translations of the verses of the Qur'an can be understood directly. One of the mufassir in the modern century in the 1960 came from Tunisia, namely Ibn Assyria, he was a scholar of ahlussunnah wal jamaah who followed the faith of Abu Hasan Al-Ash'ari. His book of tafsir entitled al-Tahrir wa al-Tanwir is considered an important encyclopedia of tafsir to be studied. Ibn Assyria used a scientific pattern in explaining the meaning of the verses of the Qur'an, he used contemporary scientific theories to explain the verses of the Qur'an, but did not impose the theory, which was new compared to the previous interpretations. The tafsir of al-Tahrir wa al-Tanwir is seen as influenced by western epistemology, so the author in this study intends to dig deeper into the convergence of western epistemology in the tafsir of Ibn Assyria or the tafsir of al-Tahrir wa al-Tanwir.
