The Concept of Raja' in Tafsir Al-Misbah and Its Relevance for Contemporary Psychospirituality
Main Article Content
Abstract
This study is motivated by the tendency to understand the concept of hope (raja’) in modern life as mere psychological optimism, without considering its theological and spiritual dimensions in the Qur’anic framework. The aim of this research is to examine the concept of hope (raja’) in Tafsir Al-Misbah by M. Quraish Shihab and its relevance in shaping contemporary spiritual character. This study employs a qualitative method with a library research approach and thematic interpretation (tafsir maudhū‘ī) of Qur’anic verses related to hope. The findings show that hope in Tafsir Al-Misbah is not only optimism, but a spiritual awareness that balances reliance on Allah’s mercy with human responsibility. Quraish Shihab emphasizes that true hope must be accompanied by real effort. The novelty of this study lies in positioning raja’ as an integrated psycho-spiritual Qur’anic concept. Its implication is a more holistic understanding of hope in forming balanced religious character.
